Michael Mikulec

Creative/Art Director, Designer

Michael Mikulec is a brand strategist, creative director, and writer whose work is centered on developing ideas in emerging categories before those categories have a shared language, stable structure, or widely agreed-upon meaning. His professional career spans more than two decades across broadcast identity, brand strategy, international creative direction, and academic leadership. He was born in Connecticut and is based in Savannah, Georgia. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Savannah College of Art and Design and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University.

Michael began his professional journey in broadcast design at ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut, where he worked on-site during the 2003 and 2004 NBA Finals. In this early environment, he contributed to teams that received two Sports Emmy Awards in 2004. The work required precision under time pressure, with constant coordination across production, design, and broadcast systems. This period shaped his long-term approach to structured communication, where clarity and timing were as important as visual execution.

Mikulec later joined Troika Design Group in Los Angeles, where he contributed to major entertainment branding initiatives including the launch of The CW network, MTV’s HD platform expansion, and NBC’s identity system for the 2008 Beijing Olympics coverage. This stage expanded his responsibilities into large-scale media ecosystems where brand systems needed to function consistently across global audiences, broadcast environments, and evolving digital formats.

Michael then moved to Rome to lead creative direction at Frame by Frame. He worked with clients across Europe and the Middle East, which expanded his understanding of international branding systems and culturally adaptive design strategies. In this role, he worked across industries and markets where visual identity had to adapt without compromising structural consistency. Mikulec later returned to the United States to pursue his MFA at Yale University, where he studied under designers including Michael Bierut and Irma Boom. During this period, he won the pitch for Fenway Park’s 100th Anniversary identity, a project that became a turning point in his independent leadership work. That project later helped establish Frame by Frame’s New York office, where he served as a partner and creative lead for clients including ESPN, CBS Sports, Fendi, MSG, and the Miami Dolphins, and led the launch of AS Roma’s television network.

Michael further expanded his work in 2013 by leading the naming, positioning, and creative direction for Curaleaf. He helped define the brand in a newly regulated industry where legitimacy, clarity, and institutional trust were more important than conventional category expression. The work involved guiding stakeholders away from familiar cannabis branding codes and toward a structured communication model grounded in healthcare language and credibility. The project earned Connecticut’s producer’s license with the highest marketing score among sixteen applicants. It later became the foundational identity for what is now the largest cannabis company in the United States, built before the category itself had standardized messaging or visual language.
